reported by David Kaill
Date: 2009-08-15
Crash type: Solo crash
Geometry: Went off path with road bike
Description: Pulled off to side of bike path (into tall grass) and my front wheel dropped into a chuck hole and I went over the handlebars. Add note to this report
Factors & Lessons
Factor: Left bike path at too high of speed
Factor: Couldn't see ground condition due to tall grass
Factor: Uneven ground
Lesson: Stay on path until sufficiently slowed down
Lesson: Don't trust surfaces you can't see
Explanation: I was worried about stopping on the path (this was the STP, and there were LOTS of riders). But I should have signaled "slowing" and reduced speed on the path to >5 mph and THEN pulled off.
