Solo crash at 1325 Fairview Ave E
reported by Mars
Date: 2009-08-26
Crash type: Solo crash
Geometry: Bike ran into object
Description: I was riding south on Fairview Ave E after turning right from Eastlake Ave E. Attempted to move from the road to what seems like a bike lane before crossing the bridge across from the Zymogenetics building. My front wheel got caught in the gap/crack that separates the road pavement from the bike lane. Eventually lost control of the bike and fell on my right side, sliding a few feet on the pavement. Bike damage to handlebar, saddle and front brake noodle. Bodily injuries were abrasions and bruises on right elbow, right hip and right knee. Add note to this report
Factors & Lessons
Factor: Obstruction at entrance to bike/ped lane
Factor: Separation between pavement sections
Factor: Turtles at entrance to bike/ped lane
Explanation: The north entrance to the bike/ped lane is poorly designed. There is a large raised island that blocks it except for a narrow strip along the trafic lane. There is also a pavement separation and some turtles than can grab a front wheel.
Lesson: Pay more attention to road surface
