Solo crash at Interstate 90 Trial Walk
Date: 2010-06-20
Crash type: Solo crash
Geometry: Bike ran into object
Description: When leaving the Sunset Elementary School grounds, the Interstate 90 Trail Walk begins to descend down a slight hill.

The area is mossy and covered by trees - and slick.

There is a sign right at the top of the hill, but by the time I saw the sign, it was too late.

I was not traveling more than 10 mph when I started down the slope, but it was like trying to stop on ice, and I crashed into the rock wall.

Factors & Lessons
Factor: Slippery pavement
Factor: Poor surface material, very slippery when wet
Lesson: Ride slower in hazardous areas
Lesson: Slow down in the rain
Explanation: I might have been able to avoid the crash if I had slowed down in the transition between places (the school grounds and the beginning of the trail proper), but some walkers came along after I crashed, and they told me that they see bikers splayed out here all the time - so I'm certainly not alone.
