Collision with motor vehicle at 3901-3999 Van Ness St NW
reported by Neil
Date: 2010-06-11
Crash type: Collision with motor vehicle
Geometry: Vehicle overtook from rear
Vehicle type: Car
Description: I had just crossed Wisconsin Ave NW on Van Ness NW after the signal had switched to green. Soon after clearing the intersection, the car that was behind me struck me from behind. There is no bike lane in that location and there were no cars parked on the right side. The lane is not wide enough to accommodate both a car and bicycle. I was riding on the right side of the lane, at 1/3 of the width of the lane, to assert my right to that space and maintain visibility. Observations of the car after the accident suggest I was struck by the right front bumper. I was thrown forward and landed in the street directly in front of the car; the driver fortunately stopped. The bicycle ended up under the right front wheel of the automobile. I was transported via ambulance to the hospital. The police responded to the scene; their report is not yet available.
