reported by Carrie
Date:
2009-12-03
Crash type:
Solo crash
Geometry:
Bike lost stability and crashed
Description:
Biking north on 28th Ave. As my bike entered the unexpected ice/slush patch, which formed due to water flowing over the roadway from a creek/spring without proper drainage, the bike slid out from under me causing me to loose stability and crash. Add note to this report
Factors & Lessons
Factor:
Road quality poor
Explanation:
The key factor in this crash was that water from a nearby creek/spring is not managed properly so it regularly flows over the road-bike route. Under cold winter conditions this creates icy conditions. A neighbor who stopped to see if I was ok reports that the water regularly flows across the road in this location and many bikers crash in this spot.
Lesson:
Pay more attention to road surface
Lesson:
Glad to be wearing a helmet!

Additional conditions description:
Crash occurred due to the formation of ice and slush across 28th Ave. Water from a spring/creek on the uphill side of the road flows over the bike route in this location. Although the day was dry, since it was cold during my morning commute it had turned to ice. My bike slid out from under me as I passed over the ice and slush.
