Collision with other bicycle at Washington 513
reported by Brian Smoliak
Date: 2009-11-06
Crash type: Collision with other bicycle
Geometry: Bike crossed into path of bike
Description: Other bike was traveling southbound across Montlake Bridge on the west sidewalk; I was traveling northbound on the west sidewalk along Montlake Blvd. that meets the bridge after a bend to the right. The turn offers poor visibility of oncoming pedestrian and bike traffic on the bridge deck. As I followed the sidewalk to the right, the oncoming bike approached at a moderate speed with a clear intention to avoid the curve to the right and jump the curb straight onto the wide portion of Montlake Blvd. Due to my position on the right-hand side of the sidewalk and the other bike's high speed, we met at an head-on angle. Both bikes braked hard, but the oncoming bike skidded into mine. I braced hard with my right foot and slowed the tangled bikes to a stop. The other biker apologized for his speed, checked for injuries and/or damage, and kept on with what I assume was his original plan: jumping the curb onto Montlake Blvd and continuing on the street surface.
