Hazard reports for Irvine, CA
Location:
University Dr, Irvine, CA 92612, USA
Priority:
High risk
Status:
Pending
Description:
A connector to the San Diego Creek Bike Path is not at the SW Corner of Campus & University. Riders coming up-stream & wanting to go East on Campus leave the Bike Path & travel illegally against traffic in the Class 2 Bike Lane to the corner to proceed East on Campus Bike Lane.
The less obvious legal option is to continue under Campus, back track to the NW corner & then make a left or âDouble Crossâ to SW corner to proceed East safely⦠Adding a connector up to the SW corner from the Bike Path would provide safer logical access to the intersection, and control illegal wrong way traffic in a very busy University Drive bike lane. Removing the existing connector would reduce the invitation to follow the line of sight logic of going against traffic. Full report

Shady Canyon Ave, Irvine, CA 92612, USA
Priority:
High risk

Description:
Shady Canyon Bike Path was laid out as a Side Path to Shady Canyon Drive. It is too steep: Bikes heading down hill go too fast & bikes huffing up often do not hold a line or stop to gasp & block the path. It is used by pedestrians, even though there is a groomed bridal / hiking path right alongside, so with mixed use & a few kids it gets a bit crazy. The trail could have been swept West to reduce the grade, but the sensitive meadow open space would have been impacted... Experienced riders should climb on the street to avoid slower path users. Descening riders shoudl ride brakes all teh way to control speed or cross to teh street to descend at terminal velocity.
Resident motorists will still give you dirty looks or worse for not "getting out of their street" & using your bike path, but you will have a better experience either way. Watch out at the summit crossing the street to descend; a few "Share The Road" signs and Sharrows ( see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shared_lane_marking ) would be great help... Full report

Description:
Southbound riders come off the Bike Bridge on "wrong side" of street.
Would be good opportunity to split & direct Southbound riders to ride on the correct & legal side of the street as they continue South on Yale; especially as this is adjacent to a school. Remove Stop at bottom of bridge that no one obeys or enforces & stripe bike lanes with directiomnal arrows across to the West side of the street. Full report

Description:
Have seen a rider break arm on this one: There is a access curb cut for trucks to get into landscaping & Harvard Bike Side Path: Given time of day the curb cut looks like a connector to the Side Path - but it is too tall to ride over with anything other than a truck. A rider heading NB on Harvard Class 2 Lane trying to get over to the Class 3 Side Path will not make it. Need to paint curb cut with contrasting black edging or red curb paint to make more visible... Description:
Shady Canyon Bike Path - There is NO BICYCLE as VEHICLE ACCESS. Non-residents can not get through the gate to reach the Bike Path. No access connector was designed. Security at gate tells riders to use overgrown narrow sidewalk on the wrong side of the street to get to the Bike Path ⦠instead they contribute to wrong way riding on a pedestrian sidewalk with poor line of sight and above average foot traffic as it is the pedestrian & equestrian access from the Turtle Rock Park designated staging area to the Shady Canyon Bike Path & Trail. Description:
Shady Canyon Bike Path - There should be curb cut & bike path connector & a sign directing riders to enter the Shady Canyon Bike Path at this access point so they will not miss the path & end up dealing with the private gate or wrong side sidewalk access at Sunnyhill. There is an access point here for fire trucks, and erosion control path for same, but curb cut is not safe for bikes to roll over. The path turns South away from the street here & it would be a natural place to move from on-street Class 2 lane to Class 3 Bike Path. Full report

Description:
Shady Canyon Bike Path - There is NO BICYCLE as VEHICLE ACCESS. Non-residents can not get through the gate to reach the Bike Path only 20 feet inside the gate. No access connector was designed. Security at gate tells riders to use overgrown narrow sidewalk on the wrong side of the street to get to the Bike Path. All they need to do is tell riders to immediately turn left or right on the Bike Path just past the gate & not ride on the private streets within the gated community⦠instead they contribute to wrong way riding on a pedestrian sidewalk with poor line of sight and above average foot traffic as it is the pedestrian & equestrian access from the Turtle Rock Park designated staging area to the Shady Canyon Bike Path & Trail. Proper fix would be to put access to the Bike Path at SE corner of Sunnyhill & Shady Canyon, outside the gate, allowing entry on the Right side of the street per California Vehicle Code! Full report
