Geometry: Vehicle overtook from rear
Injury: Moderate
Description: I had just crossed Wisconsin Ave NW on Van Ness NW after the signal had switched to green. Soon after clearing the intersection, the car that was behind me struck me from behind. There is no bike lane in that location and there were no cars parked on the right side. The lane is not wide enough to accommodate both a car and bicycle. I was riding on the right side of the lane, at 1/3 of the width of the lane, to assert my right to that space and maintain visibility. Observations of the car after the accident suggest I was struck by the right front bumper. I was thrown forward and landed in the street directly in front of the car; the driver fortunately stopped. The bicycle ended up under the right front wheel of the automobile. I was transported via ambulance to the hospital. The police responded to the scene; their report is not yet available. Full report

Geometry: Vehicle turned after passing bike
Injury: None
Description: RIGHT HOOK - Approaching Furman, vehicle in right lane passes me I'm in bike lane to the right, about 10' behind the the car.

With no turn signal the car slows suddenly, and begins to make a classic "right hook". I've got a 3' wide bike lane and nowhere to go but into the car. I yelled at the top of my lungs and still ended up with final braking maneuver being my hand on the side side window of the car.

Immediately being mouthed to me from inside the car are the words "I'm sorry!" --- taking the cell phone away from her ear, she repeats the phrase several times as I'm now in front of the car yelling "you know you should get a ticket for being on the phone".

The driver clearly wasn't paying attention. I had back and front bright daylight blinking lights.

We parted company with pedestrians/witnesses shouting support "we saw it!" "she could have killed you!" "she was on the phone, I saw it!"

Once the adrenalin settled, I realized the correct next step would have been to drop my bike in front of the car, get the licence plate number, and call the police to have the driver charged with Distracted Driving.

Maybe next time I'll gain composure sooner to call the police. Full report

There is a large section on 10th Ave E just before it crosses over 520 that has a cluster of deep potholes, cracks and ruptured pavement. As my back tire hit one of the potholes, my bike flipped upwards and I could hear my back tire hissing as my head and left side of my body slammed into the ground. It is a bit fuzzy after that. I was lucky that a number of cars had stopped and blocked the road so I didn't get run over. At least seven people stopped, collected my stuff, assisted and someone drove my bike to my apartment.
