Geometry: Metro Bus forced my friend and I off the road.
Injury: Moderate
Description: On 10/19/10 my friend, Brant Kane, and I were bicycling west(?) heading into Redmond on Avondale Road NE near the intersection with NE 85th Place. The time was approximately 1:50pm We were in the bike lane when we heard a metro bus approaching from behind. Shortly ahead of us the road narrowed with the bike lane coming to an end. The bus driver sped up and decided to pass us as the bike lane ended and the road narrowed down. Given the narrowness of the space and the close proximity of the bus (1-2') we were forced off the road and over the curb. In an effort to not crash into the rear of Brant's bike possibly knocking him into the side of the bus, I was forced to slam on the brakes and lay the bike down causing minor damage to my bike and myself. There were no injuries or damage to Brant Kane. There was no collision with the bus.

It was obvious the bus driver decided he/she didn't want be slowed down and decided at the last second to try and shoot around us at the point where the bike lane ended and the roadway narrowed. Given the situation we had no choice, but to run over the curb and off the road. The driver kept going and didn't bother to stop or slow down to see if we were OK. At the very least the driver showed bad judgment in handling the bus and utter disregard for us. Is this the kind of driver we want for our Bus lines?

We were not able to see the driver or get the number of the bus. This incident took place on Avondale Road NE near the intersection with NE 85th place at approximately 1:50pm traveling towards downtown Redmond. In looking at the Metro schedules I believe the bus line is Redmond - Fall City #224. It should be easy enough to figure out who the driver was at that time. Full report

Geometry: Bike turned into oncoming bike
Injury: Serious
Description: I was heading southbound on the Samm River Trail on a straightaway at about 15-18 mph (my bike does not have speedometer). I was riding alone with no riders in front or behind. I saw a northbound biker with a "kid trailer" behind going relatively slowly, and a couple other bikers behind her. Just as I was approaching the "kid trailer" the biker behind her decided to make a pass, coming into my lane, and striking me head on. Both of us were thrown from our bikes. The other biker (named Eric) had cuts on his hand, but otherwise was apparently uninjured and ambulatory. He clearly was at fault, and apologized for the accident. He did not give me his contact information. Full report

Location: 4016-4034 148th Ave NE, Redmond, WA 98052, USA
Geometry: Bike lost stability and crashed
Injury: Moderate
Description: Traveling southbound on the sidewalk on the East of 148th Ave. Pedestrian was in the middle of the narrow sidewalk. Didn't have a bell and didn't want to yell, so tried to go around on the grass to the right (between the sidewalk and the street).

Hybrid had thin tires, and grass was on dirt which was 3-4 inches higher than the sidewalk. Net effect is the tires didn't go up on the grass, but my momentum was still traveling in that direction. I rolled and spilled to the right, into the street. I was blessed to not have street traffic at that time, or things would have turned out much worse. Full report
Location: 17411-17417 NE Union Hill Rd, Redmond, WA 98052, USA
Geometry: Bike lost stability and crashed
Injury: None
Description: I was riding on the paved trail that parallels Bear Creek and runs under Union Hill Road. The trail near the creek at this point was covered with a few inches of fine silty dirt from when the creek overflowed this winter. It was dry under the bridge, but the morning dew had made the mud extremely slippery when exiting towards Redmond. I lost traction and went down. Fortunately this mud also provided a cushion above the pavement and I escaped with only a coating of mud down my left side and no damage to my bike. Full report

Geometry: Bike lost stability and crashed
Injury: Serious
Description: This was part of my daily commute. The section of Union Hill Rd between 520 and 178th Pl is very busy and has no bike lane, so I normally ride on the sidewalk. The sidewalk was closed due to construction, so I took the lane. I was a little worried about holding up a whole lane of traffic through such a congested intersection, so when the light turned green, I accelerated as fast as I could.

When I got into the intersection, I saw that the sidewalk was open on the opposite side, so I decided to get onto it at the corner curb-cut. The road was very slippery and I was going too fast to make the turn. My bike slid out from under me, and my chin. I kept my hands on the handlebars, but I still ended up with road rash on one of my fingers, and a broken hand. I was surprised at how much of a difference my half-finger gloves made with regard to the road rash.

At the time, I didn't realize how serious my injuries were. I considered riding home, but the cut on my chin really stung, and I didn't want to get a bunch of road spray in it. I called my wife and she picked me and the bike up in my hatchback. She took one look at me and decided that we were going to the ER.

At the ER, they cleaned up my chin and stitched it closed. They took X-Rays of my hand, and told me it was not broken. The next day they called and said that on review of the X-Rays, it was broken.

Today, everything has healed pretty well. I got back on the bike as soon as my hand healed, and I've been commuting since then. The bike was ok as well. The front wheel needed truing, but that was it. I added some bar-ends, as that would have saved me from some road rash (but not the broken hand). Full report

Geometry: Vehicle turned into oncoming bike
Injury: Life_threatening
Description: On the morning of July 1, 2008 I kissed my wife goodbye, and got on my bike to ride to work. The last thing I remember from that day was stopping to pick up an espresso and newspaper a few minutes later. A week later, I woke up in the ICU at Harborview Hospital in Seattle, and learned that I'd been in a serious bicycle accident.

It occurred on a fairly busy street about 2 or 3 miles from our house. I was going along at about 25 mph when a driver who was very lost and late for a job interview cut me off.

The driver did see me before turning in front of me. He apparently thought he had time to complete his turn before I'd get there. When the driver turned suddenly onto the residential street, I had about 1 second to react. I simply didn't have enough time to avoid the truck.

I ran into the passenger side of the truck, just behind the cab. Upon hitting the truck, I fell onto the road. The right rear tire of the truck, a Ford F150, then rolled over my head (this was observed by a witness). The driver then stopped his truck.

When the driver saw me lying in the road, bleeding from the head, he immediately called 911. According to the statement he gave to a detective, he then got out of his truck and "tried to communicate with the bicyclist to keep him calm". So I apparently remained conscious after the collision, although I have no memory of any of this.

Here's an article from the Seattle PI about the accident :
