Location:
897-999 N Greenville Ave, Richardson, TX 75081, USA
Geometry:
Vehicle overtook from rear
Injury:
Fatal
Description:
Police say the fatal wreck happened as the sun was coming up and that, along with speed, played a role in the accident.
According to authorities Rito Anthony Mungioli, 51, was riding his bicycle eastbound on Arapaho when he was hit from behind by a truck traveling the same direction. CBS 11 News video from the scene shows that the 18-year-old truck driver, Matthew McEwan, was visibly shaken after the accident. Police say McEwan was at fault and was allegedly driving a couple of miles over the speed limit, with the sun in his eyes. Police believe that upon impact Mungioli was thrown from the bike and hit the windshield of the truck. A Mungioli family member, who didn't want to be identified, told CBS 11 News, "There are worse things than this, but I can't think of any right now". Close friends of Mungioli say he had just started commuting to work by bicycle, 14 miles each way, back in June. At the time of the crash Mungioli was wearing a helmet that police say was shattered. Mr. Mungioli died at the scene. Jim Hoyt has known Mungioli and his family for more than 20 years. "[He was] just a real family man and just really a good guy from a good family. It's not fair," he said. Hoyt said Mungioli had begun to like his bike commute more and more. "He was just so excited to be getting into the routine and looking forward to doing, not only commuting, but doing more bike trips." So far no charges have been filed against McEwan, who police say was traveling at 42 miles an hour when the crash happened, but the case will likely go before the Dallas Grand Jury. Full report

Serious
Description:
Riding to work in the rain, I used a cut-through that was then under road construction. Clay apparently was on the concrete, but I couldn't see that because the color matched the road surface. Since it was wet, I took the left turn too fast, the front wheel pushed right, and I went down. I held the handle bars all the way to the deck, so my A/C shoulder joint and hip took the fullest blow. My elbow and knee had a bit of road rash. I made sure that I was OK, my bike was OK, and finished the ride into work. Full report
