Crash reports for Fort Myers, FL
Location:
County Road 896, Fort Myers, FL 33919, USA
Geometry:
Vehicle came from side
Injury:
Serious
Description:
3 cyclists traveling northbound on Summerlin bike path (a paved side path, only located on the west side of Summerlin Road.) All 3 cyclists waited for green crossing light at the intersection.
With green light, looked for traffic to be sure it had stopped, and then I proceeded to the corner of the intersection (where the ramp down to the road is located) and began to cross, riding my bicycle. A motorist who was traveling east on College quickly appeared at the intersection and was turning right on red. The motorist did not stop. Other cyclist yelled a warning, and I looked up to see the motorist -- she was looking to her left, away from me, and she was in motion, and not stopping. I attempted to make a fast turn to the right, out of the path of the vehicle, but was hit by her right front quarter-panel. The vehicle first impacted my left hand and handlebar. She continued to drive and as my bike was thrown clockwise, her vehicle then impacted my left hip and threw the bicycle up in the air. I landed on the left side of my helmet, first. My head was under the right side of the vehicle, between the tires, and she was still driving. Other cyclist rushed the vehicle, beat on it and yelled at the driver, and the motorist stopped.
