Geometry: Vehicle turned into crosswalk

Geometry: Vehicle turned after passing bike
Injury: Serious
Description: A gray Volvo sedan pulled up to me and crowded me as I was headed west on P Street at 4:50pm on Friday, July 16, 2010. I was on the far right side of the road. The vehicle pushed me towards the curb, blared its horn and then abruptly pulled ahead and made a sharp right turn directly in front of me onto the northbound entrance to Rock Creek Parkway. The car did not use its directional signal to indicate this turn even though there were cars (and me) directly behind.

The car hit my bike, I went down at this intersection and was sprawled on the pavement. The car stopped about 30 feet ahead of me for approximately five seconds even though there were no cars directly in front of it on the entrance ramp. The car then left the scene. I was able to get a description of the car and the license plate number.

The DC police responded to my 911 call within 90 seconds or so. They determined that the car is registered to an owner in Maryland. The Police said the registered owner would be interviewed by someone in that jurisdiction and that I'd be contacted by the DC Hit and Run Division. There was a witness to the accident (a cyclist riding directly behind me) and we both told the police that we thought the driver deliberately hit me.

The witness took photographs of my injuries with my cell phone camera. She also gave her statement to the Police. I later picked up the Traffic Crash Report, which lists the type of accident as "Hit & Run".

I went to the Emergency Room at GW Medical Center with abrasions to my arm, hip and knee. My knee and wrist were both sprained and I was advised to stay off my feet until these injuries healed. My road bike was damaged only slightly, since I was the one who hit the pavement and took the full force of the fall. Full report
Location: 3901-3999 Van Ness St NW, Washington, DC 20016, USA
Geometry: Vehicle overtook from rear
Injury: Moderate
Description: I had just crossed Wisconsin Ave NW on Van Ness NW after the signal had switched to green. Soon after clearing the intersection, the car that was behind me struck me from behind. There is no bike lane in that location and there were no cars parked on the right side. The lane is not wide enough to accommodate both a car and bicycle. I was riding on the right side of the lane, at 1/3 of the width of the lane, to assert my right to that space and maintain visibility. Observations of the car after the accident suggest I was struck by the right front bumper. I was thrown forward and landed in the street directly in front of the car; the driver fortunately stopped. The bicycle ended up under the right front wheel of the automobile. I was transported via ambulance to the hospital. The police responded to the scene; their report is not yet available. Full report
