Crash reports for Huntsville, AL
Location:
471-499 Pratt Ave NE, Huntsville, AL 35801, USA
Geometry:
Vehicle rear-ended stopped bike
Injury:
None
Description:
I was properly in the left lane, left turning position, waiting to turn left into the Pratt avenue Sonic, waiting for a huge block of oncoming traffic to pass when a van slammed into me from behind, totaling my bicycle. A motorist in the oncoming traffic saw what happened clearly in his rear view mirror. He saw me clearly with my reflective vest, rear light flashing and red reflector and my headlight flashing. The very nice policeman who took the report said the woman driving the van reported that she looked down then looked up and I was there. She had to have been looking down a very long time to not see me, which is why I'm so very, very angry and just now calm enough to type this up.
I got up with just a small bruise on my right ankle and another small bruise on my forearm. After taking pictures I moved my now totaled bicycle off the road onto a patch of grass in front of Sonic. Another witness called 911 and an ambulance and the police were there very fast. I didn't need to go to the hospital for anything, I was very lucky. It helped that I know how to fall properly. 100% and totally the unattentive motorist fault. If she had been paying attention like she was supposed to have been doing, I wouldn't have been hit. Went around
Injury:
Moderate
Description:
I went around a trash can in the bike lane. wtf is a trash can doing in the bike lane. I had the front wheel turned to go around it, and the wheel hit gravel as I was going back to the bike lane. If there hadn't been a trash can in the bike lane I could have seen the gravel. I was fine with the other gravel when my wheel wasn't turned. But what is gravel doing in the bike lane anyway? Why hasn't the city swept it since the lane was constructed? Full report

Geometry:
Vehicle turned into my right of way
Injury:
Serious
Description:
I was heading north on Gallatin. A vehicle traveling south on Gallatin had stopped in the middle lane and started to turn left across my right of way. He seemed to have seen me and stopped momentarily because I was reacting to him having started to cross my path by hollering, "No,no!", and my brakes brakes were squeaking loudly as tried to stop. At first, I thought he was going to stop and that maybe I was going to be able to avoid him by hugging the extreme right side of the north bound lane. But the vehicle started moving across my lane again, maybe thinking/assuming I could stop and or would stop. I realized he was headed to the same spot I had chosen for my escape route. I felt it was a case of either me hitting the vehicle or even worse, me possibly being run over by the vehicle. So I hit the brakes hard in a last gasp attempt to avoid the aforementioned. The front brake either applied before or more than the rear brake. As a result, the rear wheel went up in the air over my left shoulder, catapulting me over the handle bars, off of the bicycle. When I came down I braced my fall with both hands, then attempted to roll to my right forearm and shoulder. The vehicle did end up stopping again in the middle of the north bound lane. Maybe 10 -15 feet separated the spot from where the bicycle/me landed and the vehicle stopped. I immediately got up and removed my bike from the road as quick as I could. He said he was sorry and then drove up a slightly inclined hospital entrance out of sight. Several hospital employees witnessed the accident from a smoking area that was just southeast of the accident. Full report
