Bike lost stability and crashed
Injury:
Serious
Description:
I was the first person to come across the crash victim on the Lakeview Connector Trail. I did not witness the crash, but the location has a major hazard that is highly likely to have caused the crash. Below is my description.
Yesterday night 8/17/10 around 10:23 PM I came across a downed cyclist on the Lakeview Connector Trail that connects Lakeview Ave. E to Melrose Ave E. He was lying across the trail face down with his bike on top of him. I determined that he was breathing but he was unresponsive. I immediately called 911 and they arrived about 10 minutes later and put him on a stretcher and took him away. I have no idea who he is, or of the extent of his injuries, but I did see some blood on his face. The approximate location that I found him is N 47 37.640' W 122 19.669'. I ride past here frequently on my work commute. This is a particularly dangerous section of the trail for two reasons. The light-post which was once there to illuminate that section of trail is gone, making it quite dark when it was once well lit. There are numerous large bumps and ridges on the right (East) side of the trail at that location that are very difficult to see at night due to the missing light. It's highly likely that he was traveling from South to North on the right side of the trail when he encountered the bumps unexpectedly, causing him to crash. The approach to this spot in the South to North direction is downhill and bending slightly right and can encourage high rates of speed. A rider unfamiliar with this section of the trail would not know that the lights were out ahead due to the bend in the trail, and also would not know that the right (East) side of the trail is un-ridable due to the bumps and ridges. We can only assume this rider was unfamiliar with this extreme safety hazard and rode into the unlit section much faster than he should have. Full report

Description:
I had trouble with my gears, I downshifted going downhill when I meant to shift up. I was traveling not too terribly fast going downhill as I was braking trying to get my gearing figured out. When I did, then I accelerated. The car that had just passed me slowed and turned left in front of me. I hit the driver's side of the car. She finished the turn then pulled over and got out to make sure I was okay. I was, and the bike seemed to be/seems to be.
We exchanged phone numbers, but I wished I'd gotten her license plate and seen her driver's license. Full report

Vehicle turned after passing bike
Injury:
Serious
Description:
A gray Volvo sedan pulled up to me and crowded me as I was headed west on P Street at 4:50pm on Friday, July 16, 2010. I was on the far right side of the road. The vehicle pushed me towards the curb, blared its horn and then abruptly pulled ahead and made a sharp right turn directly in front of me onto the northbound entrance to Rock Creek Parkway. The car did not use its directional signal to indicate this turn even though there were cars (and me) directly behind.
The car hit my bike, I went down at this intersection and was sprawled on the pavement. The car stopped about 30 feet ahead of me for approximately five seconds even though there were no cars directly in front of it on the entrance ramp. The car then left the scene. I was able to get a description of the car and the license plate number. The DC police responded to my 911 call within 90 seconds or so. They determined that the car is registered to an owner in Maryland. The Police said the registered owner would be interviewed by someone in that jurisdiction and that I'd be contacted by the DC Hit and Run Division. There was a witness to the accident (a cyclist riding directly behind me) and we both told the police that we thought the driver deliberately hit me. The witness took photographs of my injuries with my cell phone camera. She also gave her statement to the Police. I later picked up the Traffic Crash Report, which lists the type of accident as "Hit & Run". I went to the Emergency Room at GW Medical Center with abrasions to my arm, hip and knee. My knee and wrist were both sprained and I was advised to stay off my feet until these injuries healed. My road bike was damaged only slightly, since I was the one who hit the pavement and took the full force of the fall. Full report

Description:
Was riding road-bike on my way to west-oak bart station. There's a funky curve on route where the main road (6th st.) curves around and turns into Dwight crescent rd. but 6th st. itself continues on as a minor road for a block. There is a stop sign for cars coming from that minor 6th st to go onto this curve. As I approached this curve I saw a car approaching the stop sign and got into a complete stop. I then look back to make sure there's no car behind me that would go straight onto the minor 6th st. As I was about to pass the car in the stop sign and I turned my head back forward again all of sudden I notice that the car was right in front of me and as I hit the breaks my front wheel hit the front-left of the car. I then remember tumbling twice; first onto the hood of the car then flipped over and hit the pavement. I tried to get up but got extremely woozy and sensed stiffness on my back. I checked to make sure my I can move my arms, hands, legs and feet and although felt some pain on a few parts I was happy to be able to move them all. I then saw driver came out of the car and kept saying "sorry, I didn't see you". So my speculation is that when she was in complete stop she focused on the traffic coming from her right without paying too much attention to the traffic coming from her left (direction I was coming from) because at a glance you can see if there are cars coming or not. I was taken to ER strapped onto a stretcher fearing that I broke my back or spine. Luckily nothing is broken. Full report

Description:
I was heading southbound on the Samm River Trail on a straightaway at about 15-18 mph (my bike does not have speedometer). I was riding alone with no riders in front or behind. I saw a northbound biker with a "kid trailer" behind going relatively slowly, and a couple other bikers behind her. Just as I was approaching the "kid trailer" the biker behind her decided to make a pass, coming into my lane, and striking me head on. Both of us were thrown from our bikes. The other biker (named Eric) had cuts on his hand, but otherwise was apparently uninjured and ambulatory. He clearly was at fault, and apologized for the accident. He did not give me his contact information. Full report

Bike lost stability and crashed
Injury:
Serious
Description:
Two weeks ago, on Jun 25th, sometime between 6:35 and 6:45 AM I had a solo crash while using the multi-use path on Fairview Avenue. I was heading into work early that day and had decided to use the extra time to further explore a route I'd only used two or three times before. Being aware that I was not very familiar with the route I attempted to be very aware of my surroundings.
The crash happened at the driveway entrance to Daniel's Broiler (I was travelling westbound as I was making my way from Eastlake Ave towards Seattle Center). As I approached the intersection from the west I slowed down and attempted to ascertain the location of the ramp that leads off the path and down to street level. I remember seeing a telephone pole and a fire hydrant (in that order, but from subsequent pictures of the location I found on the internet it looks like I have them reversed) off to my right and dismissed following that line as unsafe. I did not see a descent ramp, but assumed that it wasn't well marked and that I had missed it in my scan. Because of the obstructions the direction the path naturally funnels bicyclists into is straight ahead, and that was the direction I chose. I was going about 10 mph at that point. As I approached the first obstruction (memory: telephone pole, pictures: hydrant) I then saw that I'd chosen incorrectly and that the ramp was off to the side. I believe that initially my view of the ramp was eclipsed by the previously mentioned obstructions and that my further attempts to verify my direction was correct finally noticed its placement. In any case I panicked and attempted to slow down further so I could steer my bike to the ramp and avoid riding over the curb. My panic resulted in me bringing the bike to an abrupt stop and me flipping over the handlebars to land on the left front side of my helmet and my upper left shoulder. I did stop before going over the curb and, as I recall, did not end up in the street or intersection. Full report

Injury:

Description:
Another cyclist was in front of me as we waited to cross Denny. When our opportunity came, the other cyclist stood up on the pedals and started to roll into the street. I did the same, while neck-checking for peds and cars. While I was neck checking, the other cyclist had stopped. I hit my brakes so hard I went over the handlebars and landed on her. :( She was OK.
It was my fault - as in with a car, the following party is required to maintain adequate separation. Full report

Description:
I was riding south on Fairview Ave E after turning right from Eastlake Ave E. Attempted to move from the road to what seems like a bike lane before crossing the bridge across from the Zymogenetics building. My front wheel got caught in the gap/crack that separates the road pavement from the bike lane. Eventually lost control of the bike and fell on my right side, sliding a few feet on the pavement. Bike damage to handlebar, saddle and front brake noodle. Bodily injuries were abrasions and bruises on right elbow, right hip and right knee. Full report

Description:
It was a rainy evening and I had only crossed the bridge once before. Since it was dark and there was lots of traffic, I could not see how to get on the side walk. I decided to try biking over the bridge, which was wet, and quickly lost control of my bike and fell. It happened quickly. As soon as I realized I feel in the middle of traffic I jumped up and got my bike out of the road. I had hit my hand, and was in shock.
The driver behind me stopped and helped me. He even gave me a ride to my friend's house. I fractured my hand from the accident. Full report

The area is mossy and covered by trees - and slick. There is a sign right at the top of the hill, but by the time I saw the sign, it was too late. I was not traveling more than 10 mph when I started down the slope, but it was like trying to stop on ice, and I crashed into the rock wall. Full report |
